Stopping at Port Wakefield
The junction town where Highway 1 heads north and the Yorke Peninsula road heads west — and the last shared stop before the roads split. If you're breaking up the drive, this is where to do it.
Almost everyone driving north out of Adelaide passes through Port Wakefield. It's roughly an hour up Highway 1, which lands it right where you start wanting a coffee and a leg stretch — and it's the point where the road splits, north toward Port Augusta or west onto the Yorke Peninsula.
Kipling's has been on that corner since 1993, baking on site every day. Most people find us the same way: they pull in for something quick, and end up planning the stop into the next trip.
What to grab on the way through
- A pie for the road. Nine varieties, baked through the morning. The chicken satay is the one people come back for.
- Pasties and sausage rolls if you'd rather eat one-handed while the kids finish theirs.

How long to allow
Ten minutes gets you in, served and back on the road. Twenty is more realistic if you're travelling with kids or you hit us mid morning when the coach traffic comes through. Parking is right out the front, so you're not hunting for a spot with the engine running.

- Port Wakefield sits about an hour north of Adelaide on Highway 1. For most people leaving the northern suburbs it's the first proper stretch-your-legs stop of the trip.
- Where can I get food in Port Wakefield?
- Kipling's Bakery is on the Port Wakefield–Auburn Road corner and has been baking on site since 1993. Pies, pasties, sausage rolls, sandwiches, sweets and coffee are all made or prepared on site, and we're open seven days.

- It's the junction town — Highway 1 continues north toward Port Augusta while the Yorke Peninsula road branches west. Whichever way you're headed, Port Wakefield is the last shared stop before the roads split.

- We're open 7:00am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 3:00pm Saturday and 8:00am – 4:00pm Sunday. Pies and pasties come out of the oven through the morning, so early is best for the full range.
