Stopping on the way north

Heading north on Highway 1 toward Port Augusta or on to the Eyre Peninsula is a longer drive than most people plan for — which makes the first proper stop worth choosing well. Port Wakefield, about an hour north of Adelaide, is that stop for a lot of people, and Kipling's has been on the corner there since 1993.

What to grab for the long stretch

• A pie for the road. Nine varieties, baked through the morning.
• Pasties and sausage rolls for eating one-handed further up the highway.
• Sweet cabinet extras — apple scrolls, vanilla slice, éclairs — to spread across the rest of the drive.

Is Port Wakefield on the way from Adelaide to Port Augusta?

Yes — Port Wakefield sits on Highway 1 about an hour north of Adelaide, and Highway 1 continues north from there through to Port Augusta.

Where's a good food stop on the Eyre Peninsula drive?

Kipling's Bakery is on the Port Wakefield–Auburn Road corner, right on Highway 1, and has been baking on site since 1993. It's an early stop on a long drive north — pies, pasties, sandwiches, sweets and coffee, made or prepared on site, seven days a week.

How long is the drive from Adelaide to Port Augusta?

It's a few hours of driving beyond Port Wakefield, so stopping about an hour in — before the longer, quieter stretch north — tends to work well for most people.

What time does the bakery open?

We're open 7:00am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 3:00pm Saturday and 8:00am – 4:00pm Sunday. Pies and pasties come out of the oven through the morning.
